FAQ
The Answers You Need
1. What age can my child start to play netball? What age groups play NetSetGO? Children can register with the club to play netball for the year in which they are turning 6. NetSetGO is for the clubs youngest players – those aged 6 –9.
2. What does NetSetGO mean for netball?
NetSetGO is the starting point for players. It is a program which is designed to teach basic netball skills to young players while helping them build confidence, stay active, and make new friends while having fun.
3. What is the commitment for a NetSetGO Season?
Each team will train once a week at Cherrybrook Netball Courts at Greenway Park for an hour and there is a weekly game, also for an hour plus warm up time, on a Friday night at Pennant Hills Park.
4. What day and time will training be?
This we cannot tell you yet. All of our coaches are volunteers who kindly donate their time hence training times are predominantly based around the individual coach’s availability, court availability and the availability of the team members. We do ask for understanding and some flexibility when agreeing on a training time.
5. What day and time will the games be?
The NSG games are on Friday nights at Pennant Hills. Times we cannot tell you yet as the Association (Hills District Netball) advise the clubs of times once all teams are registered and the draw for the season has been compiled.
6. How long is the NSG netball season?
The season starts beginning of May and runs through to the end of August.
Team training will commence a few weeks prior to that date.
7. How are teams allocated?
For Net Set Go having fun is important while also building skills, so where possible we try to group together children of a similar age group and netball experience while also placing them in a team with a familiar face – a friend, a child from school, a team mate from a prior season. When you register you will be asked to name one or two friends your child has who is also playing.
Please don’t worry though if your child doesn’t have a friend signing up with them as netball is a great way to make new friends and once in a team, the players bond quickly.
8. What do players wear?
To training – exercise clothes and runners
To games – the club uniform, runners and no jewellery (including no earrings).
The club uniform can be purchased online Uniform | Cherrybrook United Netball Club

1. What is grading?
Grading is the process of establishing the number and composition of the Cherrybrook United netball teams to compete in the Hills District Netball Association (HDNA) competition.
The aim of grading players is to set teams, which have a balanced group of players, both in ability levels and playing positions.
Grading impacts are:
-
Skill level and experience,
-
The number of registered players in each age group.
Grading is a club policy for players from U10’s to U15’s.
Further consideration is given to:
-
Team members who have similar skill and ability.
-
Ensuring teams will have a suitable balance of position areas, that is shooters, defenders and midcourt players.
-
Ensuring teams have enough players, but not too many
2. Does everyone need to attend grading?
Yes. If a player is registered in the U10 – U15 age groups then they must attend grading. Any player not attending grading sessions will be placed in the most appropriate team by the Grading Committee, according to previous year’s coaches' reports, and/or information provided on the registration form.
We wish to emphasise that grading is one of the most essential components in preparing for a successful season and players should be aware that it is to their advantage to be seen by our graders.
If a player is unable to attend the grading session you must notify the club as soon as possible prior to the day.
3. What is our grading process?
Our grading process is a three-stage process.
1. Previous Coach's Evaluation Report- at the end of the season, each coach provides a report of each player's positions played, skills and ability, attendance at training and games, attitude, etc. All reports are to remain confidential.
2. Previous Seasons Observations - during the previous season the Grading Committee or their representative may have observed players during their games.
Steps 1 and 2 are preparation exercises for the day of grading, as with the break in between seasons, some players will continue to play summer comps and the abilities can change significantly.
3. Practical Grading – players will be placed in trial teams based on the previous year’s coaches' reports and the positions recorded in the players registration. Independent graders will assess all players and this will be taken into account for a player’s team allocation.
4. When is grading?
The exact time and date of your child’s grading session will be provided after registrations close.
5. What skills are assessed?
The following skills and attributes may be assessed but are not limited to:
-
Ball handling skills (passing/catching)
-
Attacking and Defending
-
Footwork, speed and agility
-
Perception and cognition skills
-
Positional play/understanding of the game
-
Sportsmanship, effort and attitude
6. Grading appeals
Any correspondence regarding an individual player’s grading, either pre or post placement in teams, shall only be accepted in writing and forwarded to the Grading Committee, via email within 2 days of the teams being released.
It’s important that parents do not speak with the grading team during sessions as it limits our time and ability to watch all players.
Cherrybrook United Netball Club will follow the Netball NSW Grievance Policy if a satisfactory solution is not found.
The club can be emailed at secretary@cherrbyrooknetballclub.com.au
7. How are the teams formed?
Ideally numbers of players placed in a team will allow maximum court time for all players in the team.
We aim for 8 to 10 players per team.
Several factors affect team formation which we consider to maximise everyone’s court time.
-
· Number of players in each age group (some players may be asked to play up an age group due to numbers and ability).
-
· Balance of positions in a team (i.e. shooting, mid-court, defence).
-
· Representative players’ restrictions.
8. How does it work for NetSetGo (7-9 year olds)?
NetSetGO players do not need to attend grading as outlined above for Junior Players. NetSetGO is focused on the building and development of basic netball skills while having fun with existing and new friends.
HDNA run a Set and a GO competition with “soft” grades for each. These groupings approximately equate to U8’s and U9’s but as they are ability/skill based, the ages within a team may be a little mixed. At Cherrybrook United we like players to play with friends, where possible as we know players feel comfortable when trying something new with someone they know.
NetSetGO – Set Teams (Previously Under 8s):
Players will be placed in teams with their friends where possible with consideration given to whether players are new to netball or a returning for the season. Friend requests must be received at the time of registration and can only be accommodated if numbers for an age group permit.
NetSetGO – GO Teams (Previously Under 9s):
In GO teams we perform a soft grade. This means a number of factors are taken into consideration when forming the teams including age, playing experience, skill level and friendships. Please note that players are not simply ranked and placed into teams. Any requests to play with friends must be received at the time of registration and will be considered by the Committee providing they are of a similar ability and can only be accommodated if numbers for an age group permit.
9. What happens after grading day?
Teams will be formed by the Grading Committee, which consists of the current club Grading Coordinator (not involved in the actual grading), the Coaching Coordinator and 2 independent members of the Cherrybrook United Netball Club committee and an external member of the Netball Community.
All players will be advised of team placement within 14 - 21 days after grading has taken place, via email and/or listed on the Cherrybrook United Netball Club website.
10. What division will our team be placed in by HDNA?
The Grading Committee will make a recommendation to HDNA about which grade a team would be best suited to when the team is registered.
HDNA’s Grading Committee makes their own decisions on the grade a team is placed into based on their broader knowledge of the skills levels of other club teams in each age group.
Numbers of teams entered in each age group impacts these decisions as well and HDNA is not obligated to go with the Club’s recommendation.
Our Club may appeal a grading decision by HDNA, however, appeals are very rarely successful.
Players and parents are asked to be reasonable and objective in their expectations and to encourage their children to accept their team selection
